This project was based off the book; Into The Wild by John Krakauer. In this project we constructed our own camping gear, updated personal journals every day. Leading up to the camping trip in Anza Borrego, we made headlamps, camp stoves, and compasses. Into The wild is one of my favorite projects of all time.
The HeadlampA mint can headlamp is powered by a 4.5 V battery. A resistor is used to prevent the LEDs burning out. In order to put the LEDs in and order so that if one goes out the other will not, we made the decision to put them in a parallel circuit. A parallel circuit is a type of circuit where each light has its own positive and negative wire.
The Soda Can Stove
A soda can stove is powered by denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is a extremely flammable liquid that we light inside our soda can stoves. The flames from the ignited fuel travel along the edges of the soda can and exit through tiny holes that are there to help cook whichever meal we chose to make. During the camping trip, my group used our soda can stoves for making pasta for dinner, and pancakes and bacon for breakfast.

The CompassThe magnetic field is a strange force that moves in slow curving arcs around earth. Some materials that are magnetic are iron, nickel, and cobalt. A magnetic field has a strange force that brings certain magnetic materials together or pushes them apart. We experimented with magnets and iron shavings in class. When we spread the iron shavings apart we saw the magnetic field around the magnets which looks a little bit like the long curved rings of saturn. The way Earth’s magnetic field works is the strongest magnetic pull is towards the northern most point on earth. Our compass needle is made up of a magnetic material that will attract towards the north pole, and show us which direction we are going in.
Overall Experience
My favorite part of the camping trip was during the second day when me and a friend hiked to the very top of the mountain and came back just in time for dinner. It was my favorite part because I got to see everything from a different perspective, and I conquered my fears.
The most important thing I have learned was that bad things happen, but people always bounce back from them.
