Although today was my second to last da, it was very eventful. In the morning I helped Paul make an equipment sign out sheet, after that I finished up my presentation binder and tied off a few loose ends.
In the afternoon I accompanied Alex to city TV to where he gave me a tour of their operation and let me inside the control room where I spent an hour with Bob, the master controller. In that hour I watched Bob remotely operate cameras and switch between feeds of the environmental panel. (CSPAN) Today was a lot of fun, I'm very excited to go back to school... however I'm going to miss everyone very much..

Creating my presentation was very easy with guidance from Bill, I knew exactly what I wanted to present to my advisory and what I wanted to show them that I had learned.
I knew that I wanted to explain how city government works and how it affects us. In addition to city government I wanted to explain a little about the city and how it works to serve the public. If you're interested, my internship presentation can be found here: As an intern at city hall, I've definable developed a greater appreciation for how hard the city works to make sure that it's residents are satisfied and comfortable in their city. Everyone here has a very strong work ethic, which is something that I'd like to develop more as I grow older, everyone is very passionate about their work and really takes the time and effort to get it done.
I've seen my life develop in a way which I didn't see coming, I find it easier to talk to new people, and how to communicate with adults in a work environment. As an intern I have an increased interest in politics, which is why I decided to enroll in the international politics class at my school. I'm very excited to learn more about politics in general and expand my horizons! When in a professional work environment, communication is everything. Whether it be face to face or through email, you must always stay in contact with your peers and collaborate as much as possible. By seeing this is made me appreciate working in groups more at school, because I know that I will most likely have to work with other people in the future, and have to collaborate whether I like it or not. Looking back at my time here as an intern, I can see that I was very helpful to the department, because I was always around to do whatever miscellaneous tasks they had for me. I've learned so much here and how the city works, being in a real work environment has helped me greatly by giving me a taste of the real world. The work that I've done here is significant for the department because I helped make a calendar and crafted El Nino tips that were distributed throughout the department. As for projects, I've done multiple; a calendar for the department, El Nino tips, and a journal for every day of my time at city hall (in addition to this blog). As most of my time here has been spent shadowing my mentor, and learning in the field, I've had my eyes opened to a whole new field of possibilities.
I definitely have a deeper interest in city government and depending on how this next year goes, might want to pursue that interest. Today I helped with some more El Nino tips, and worked more on my internship presentation. As I head into the weekend before my last week of internship, I start to think about what school will be like for me after being in a work environment, it'll definitely be a lot different, with school comes more direction which for me is a good thing, but less freedom. Being in a work environment allows you to have alot of freedom to eat where you would like and do work at your own pace, and not have to pack up and go to other classes. Being in a work environment is a lot like working on one big project, instead of multiple projects across different subjects at school.
Today I spent most of my time working on my IPOL presentation. Although in the morning I helped Bill with making two binders each with a copy of the new city style guide. Later that day I also accompanied him to the print shop, where the city mass produces any kind of flyer or brochure. While we were there Bill gave me a copy of his new business card, complete with the city's new logo!
Today I checked out some of my friend's blogs and left comments on them. The blogs I checked out were; Chris, Cameron, and Abril. Abril seems to really enjoy her internship inside a film studio and looks really happy doing all different kinds of work. Cameron is very happy where he is and seems to be learning a lot. Chris I'm sure is working very hard creating a website for a online clothing company. I'm very happy for all of them and can't wait to see a lot of them once I get back to school.
Today I started working on my IPOL presentation. Although I'm sad that internship is nearing it's end, I'm excited to share what I've learned with my advisory. Today I attended a city council meeting and got to see a different side of our city's government. During the meeting the mayor proclaimed that January 2016 be Korean heritage month in the city of San Diego.
After a few holiday announcements the council allowed time for public comments, most of the people who spoke seemed to be either very angry or didn't seem to have everything together. One man, however did have a point about how the Tijuana river is polluting our beaches, and how the lifeguards who have to go into the river and make potential saves, are getting sick from things like E-Coli and etc. Hi point was that he doesn't believe the city is doing enough to protect them from these things. After the meeting my friend Cameron's mother who works in the council chambers took me on a behind the scenes tour and too me to her office on the second floor. It was a great experience meeting new people, especially meeting the mayor (a second time) Today I accompanied Bill to channel 10 news where his colleauge did an interview about the El Nino. While they conducted the interview the anchor let me sit in her chair! After the interview the news anchor took us on a small tour of the news station. It was very interesting to see behind the scenes of a news station.
Today also marks the end of my first full week in city hall. The internship has been extremely exciting and extremely interesting. |
